Your vacuum works hard to keep your home clean, but it also needs regular maintenance to stay effective. A dirty or clogged vacuum loses suction, spreads dust back into the air, and wears out faster. Here’s a simple step-by-step guide to keep your vacuum running like new.
1. Unplug the vacuum
Always unplug your vacuum before cleaning or opening any parts. This keeps you safe while working on it.
2. Empty the dustbin or replace the bag
If you have a bagless vacuum, empty the dustbin after every use or when it’s about two-thirds full.
If you use vacuum bags, replace the bag when it’s full. A full bag reduces suction and makes the motor work harder.
3. Clean or replace the filters
Most vacuums have one or two filters.
- Remove the filters according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
- Tap them gently over a garbage can to remove loose dust.
- Wash washable filters with warm water only (no soap).
- Let them air-dry completely—usually 24 hours—before putting them back.
If the filters are worn or damaged, replace them.
4. Check the brush roll
Hair, threads, and debris often wrap around the brush roll.
- Turn the vacuum over.
- Use scissors or a seam ripper to carefully cut away tangled hair.
- Remove any debris stuck in the bristles.
A clean brush roll helps your vacuum pick up dirt more effectively.
5. Inspect the hose and attachments
Detach the hose and look through it to check for clogs.
- Use a broom handle or long object to gently push out any blockage.
- Rinse attachments with warm water if they’re dirty.
- Let everything dry completely before reattaching.
6. Wipe down the exterior
Use a damp cloth to wipe dust and dirt off the outside of the vacuum. This keeps it looking clean and prevents buildup.
How often should you clean your vacuum?
- Dustbin or bag: After every use or when full
- Filters: Once a month (or as recommended)
- Brush roll and hose: Every 1–2 months
- Deep clean: Every 3–6 months
The benefits of a clean vacuum
- Stronger suction
- Better air quality
- Longer vacuum lifespan
- More effective cleaning
Taking just a few minutes to clean your vacuum can make a big difference in how well it performs—and how clean your home feels.
